Jesus Christ Chapel
The Chapel of Jesus Christ is a small Orthodox chapel located in the Old Town of Sozopol, on Apollonia Street, in Sozopol Municipality, Burgas Region. It is one of approximately 20 small chapels that the Christian population of Sozopol built in the 19th and early 20th century on the sites of medieval churches destroyed by Ottoman forces during the 15th–18th centuries. When the Ottoman authorities demolished or appropriated the more than 20 churches that once stood in the medieval town of Sozopol, the local Christian community gradually replaced them with these small, modest chapel structures — a pattern common to many Bulgarian Black Sea towns of the period — and a number of them survive to this day. The Chapel of Jesus Christ is one such community chapel, situated in the heart of the Old Town in close proximity to the Church of the Dormition of the Holy Mother of God and the Arch of ancient Apollonia, and forms part of the dense network of small sacred spaces that gives the historic quarter of Sozopol its distinctive spiritual character alongside its larger active churches.
