    Monument to the Tsar Liberator

The Monument to the Tsar Liberator is one of Sofia’s most important historical landmarks, located near the National Assembly. Erected in 1907, the monument honors Emperor Alexander II of Russia for his role in the Liberation of Bulgaria from Ottoman rule in 1878. The impressive bronze equestrian statue stands on a richly decorated granite pedestal featuring reliefs and inscriptions depicting key moments from the Russo-Turkish War. With its monumental scale and central location, the monument is a powerful symbol of freedom, gratitude and Bulgaria’s modern history.
