Restaurant Vodenitzata
Vodenitsata is a large traditional Bulgarian restaurant and mehana in Plovdiv, set on Saedinenie Street 11 in the Kapitan Burago area, close to the Trakia district. As the name suggests — "vodenitsa" means water mill — the concept leans firmly into Bulgarian folklore and rural tradition, with a stone-and-wood interior designed to channel an old village feel, and a big open-air garden for warmer months. Capacity is serious: around 160 seats inside and up to 200 outside, which tells you exactly what the place is built for — family gatherings, christenings, birthdays, corporate parties, wedding receptions, and long group dinners. The menu sticks to the Bulgarian classics, cooked in proper proportions: tarator, Smolyan bean salad, kyopoolu, kachamak, mixed grill, a well-regarded lamb "after St. George's Day" recipe, cheverme, and barbecue from the skara, alongside a broad selection of Bulgarian wines and rakias. Live folk music and dance performances — often featuring Balkan rhythms from across the region — are part of the regular programming, and there's a kids' area with an animator for family visits. A pick aimed squarely at groups, celebrations, and anyone (locals or visitors) looking for a full-blown traditional Bulgarian dining experience rather than a quiet table for two.
