    Hemingway Restaurant

Hemingway is one of Plovdiv's longest-running and best-known restaurants, open since 2002 and tucked into a quiet side street in the city center, at General Gurko Street 10, just steps from the Roman Odeon and within easy reach of both the Main Street and Kapana. The concept is exactly what the name suggests: a bohemian-literary atmosphere, with artistic décor, shelves of books on the sidewalk next to the summer tables, and regular live jazz and soul performances that have made the place a favorite gathering spot for Plovdiv's artsy crowd. The menu is broad — modern Bulgarian and European cuisine with a focus on steak specialties and author's dishes — and includes everything from Plovdiv-style kebapcheta made with Duroc pork and slow-cooked pork ribs glazed in house barbecue sauce, to beef pepper steaks, confit pork shank, and lighter veal meatballs; a number of fish dishes and vegetarian options round it out. A wine list with both Bulgarian and imported labels is taken seriously — there's even a small wine shop attached to the restaurant — and the kitchen is known for its fresh homemade bread. The restaurant is sizeable (around 100 seats inside, 60 on the terrace) but the vibe stays intimate. A natural pick for a long dinner with live music, a romantic evening, or a reliably good meal in the heart of Plovdiv's old center. Just a heads-up: steaks and fish are priced per 100 grams, so orders can add up quickly.
