Defenders of Stara Zagora” Memorial Complex
The “Defenders of Stara Zagora” Memorial Complex is one of Bulgaria’s most powerful patriotic landmarks, rising on Chadar Mogila Hill in Stara Zagora (today’s “Bulgarian Volunteers” Park). Created as a monumental tribute to the Battle of Stara Zagora (19/31 July 1877), the complex recreates the iconic Samara Flag as a soaring sculptural form—an unmistakable symbol of sacrifice and courage. Opened on 30 July 1977 (for the battle’s 100th anniversary), the site includes an ossuary for the fallen, an eternal flame, and a dramatic ensemble of figures that turn the hill into a place of remembrance and pride. Beyond its historical meaning, the memorial is also a top viewpoint, offering wide panoramas over the city and the Thracian plain.
