Monument to 1300 Years of Bulgaria

The “Founders of the Bulgarian State” Monument is one of the most iconic landmarks in Shumen and a major symbol of Bulgarian history. Completed in 1981 to commemorate 1300 years since the founding of the Bulgarian state, the monument stands dramatically on the Shumen Plateau, overlooking the city. Its monumental concrete sculptures depict key figures and events from early Bulgarian history, including Khan Asparuh, the adoption of Christianity, and the creation of the Cyrillic script. With its striking geometric forms, powerful symbolism and panoramic views, the monument is both an architectural masterpiece and a profound tribute to Bulgaria’s national identity. It is one of the most visited cultural and historical sites in Northeastern Bulgaria.
